Ingredients:

– 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
– 1/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
– 3/4 cup warm milk
– 1/4 cup granulated sugar
– 1/2 tsp salt
– 2 large eggs
– 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
– Zest of 1 orange (optional, for added flavor)

– 1 cup granulated sugar

Instructions:

1. **Prepare the dough:**
– In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
– In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and half of the flour. Mix until smooth.
– Add the softened butter, orange zest (if using), and remaining flour. Mix until a dough forms.
– Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
– Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

2. **Shape the dough:**
– Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
– Cut the dough into squares using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife.

3. **Fry the dough:**
– Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
– Fry the dough squares in batches for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan.
– Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried dough squares to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
