Shirley MacLean Beaty was born on April 24, 1934 in Richmond, Virginia. She was named after the famous actress Shirley Temple. His father, Ira, had a variety of careers, including psychology teacher, school principal, and real estate agent. Her mother, Kathryn, was a drama teacher who fueled her passion for show business to raise her family. In 1937, Shirley welcomed her younger brother Warren into the world, who became a major Hollywood talent himself. Because of her weakness, Kathryn enrolled Shirley in ballet lessons at a young age, which inspired her to perform. Despite breaking her leg during her performance in Cinderella at the age of four, Shirley showed great determination by continuing the show without complaint. Throughout her childhood, she preferred to take on male roles in dance due to her height and the lack of male dancers in her classes. This tendency to play masculine roles continued into high school; here he played
baseball games and holds the record for most home runs in a season.After attending Washing-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia, MacLaine worked her way up from baseball bat to pom-pom and became a part of the cheerleading squad. During this time, MacLaine realized that her dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer might not come true due to her height and lack of technical skills. He later continued to act and participate in various high school plays. During the summer of her freshman year, MacLaine decided to pursue opportunities in New York City, where she auditioned for musical roles on Broadway. He earned a spot in the chorus of the final production of Oklahoma. After this experience, he returned to Virginia to finish high school. After graduating, MacLaine returned to New York.

Returning to New York, MacLaine found work as a model and directed Broadway musicals. In less than a year, she was cast as understudy Carol Haney in the popular Broadway production of Pajama Games. Although Haney was known for never missing a show, MacLaine was willing to leave the production to join the musical Can-Can. However, before he could retire, Haney injured his leg, preventing him from making the . MacLaine was later brought in to replace him.
