**Ingredients:**

– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
– 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 1 cup granulated sugar
– 1/2 cup brown sugar
– 2 large eggs
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 cup sour cream
– 2 cups peeled and finely chopped apples (Granny Smith or similar)
– 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

**For the topping:**
– 1/4 cup granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. **Preheat the Oven:**
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.

2. **Mix Dry Ingredients:**
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Set aside.

3. **Cream Butter and Sugars:**
In a large bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.

4. **Add Eggs and Vanilla:**
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract.

5. **Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:**
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the sour cream, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Gently fold in the chopped apples and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly.

In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon for the topping. Sprinkle it evenly over the cake batter.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
