Instructions:

1. **Prepare the dough:**
– In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
– In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, salt, melted butter, and egg. Add the yeast mixture and mix well.
– Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
– Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
– Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

2. **Shape the doughnut holes:**
– Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small, even pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.

3. **Fry the doughnut holes:**
– Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
– Fry the doughnut holes in batches for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Make sure not to overcrowd the pot.
– Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried doughnut holes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

4. **Coat the doughnut holes:**
– In a shallow bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon (if using).
– While the doughnut holes are still warm, roll them in the sugar mixture to coat evenly.

5. **Serve:**
– Serve the sugar-coated doughnut holes warm and enjoy!
