 Ingredients:

– 12 ounces penne pasta
– 1 tablespoon olive oil
– 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy), sliced
– 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
– 1 yellow bell pepper, thinly sliced
– 1 onion, thinly sliced
– 3 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
– 1/2 cup tomato sauce
– 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
– 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Red pepper flakes (optional)
– Fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)
– Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)

 Instructions:

1. **Cook the Pasta:**
– Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

2. **Prepare the Sausage and Vegetables:**
– In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
– Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned and cooked through. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.

3. **Cook the Vegetables:**
– In the same skillet, add the sliced bell peppers and onion. Cook until they are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
– Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

4. **Combine Ingredients:**
– Return the cooked sausage to the skillet with the vegetables.
– Add the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine.
– Let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

5. **Mix with Pasta:**
– Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet and toss to combine everything well. Ensure the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce.

6. **Serve:**
– Garnish with fresh chopped basil and grated Parmesan cheese.
