  • 4 cups (1 liter) whole milk
  • 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons (28 grams) uncooked butter Salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ( optional)

 Instructions:

  1. Mix milk and sugar: Pour the whole milk into a thick-bottomed pot and add the granulated sugar. Stir well to combine.2. Heat the mixture: Place the pot over medium heat and bring the milk-sugar mixture to a boil. Stir constantly to dissolve the sugar and prevent the milk from burning on the bottom of the pan.
  2. Reduce and thicken: Once the mixture is simmering, reduce the heat to low.Simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the volume has reduced by about half and the mixture has reached a creamy consistency. Please be patient as this process takes some time.
  3. Add butter and vanilla: Once the mixture has thickened, remove the pan from the heat. Add the unsalted butter until completely melted and incorporated into the mixture. If desired, add  vanilla extract for more flavor.
  4. Cool and store: Allow the homemade condensed milk to cool completely in the pot. Once cooled, transfer  to a clean, airtight container and store  in the refrigerator. It gets thicker as it cools.Tips for Success:
  • Stir: It’s important to stir the milk-sugar mixture frequently, especially as it begins to thicken, so that it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot and burn.
  • Consistency: Sweetened condensed milk is ready when it is reduced by about half and has a thick, creamy consistency, similar to store-bought sweetened condensed milk.
  • Storage: Store homemade sweetened condensed milk in  an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can be kept for up to 2 weeks. Be sure to  stir well before using  as it may thicken even further as it cools.Uses: Homemade sweetened condensed milk can be used in a variety of recipes such as:
  • Desserts such as fudge, ice cream and cakes
  • Baked goods such as cookies, cakes and bars
  • Drinks such as coffee, tea and chocolate for hot drinks

By Making your own sweetened condensed milk at home allows you to enjoy the convenience of this important ingredient while controlling the quality of the ingredients and tailoring them to your taste preferences.
