An extraordinary journey
Bob Barker, a member of the Sioux tribe, grew up on a Native American reservation in South Dakota. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Jo Gideon, at a concert there. After marrying in 1945, Barker served in the Navy during World War II but was never able to find serious work. She later graduated from university with a degree in economics. Barker’s path to fame began when he was approached by a game producer looking for a new guest for ‘Truth or Consequences.’ She hosted the show from 1956 to 1975 and eventually hosted the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants. However, Barker appeared on the “The Price is Right” stage in 1972 and became a household name. The show became the longest-running program in history, with Barker serving as executive producer and winning a whopping
awards for his hosting skills.

Love, loss and perseverance
Barker credits his late wife, Dorothy Jo Gideon, for his successful career. In 1981, Gideon died of lung cancer and Barker never remarried. But he found another partner, Nancy Burnet, who has been with him for forty years. Burnet says Barker’s health was due to his low drug use. Even though he is 99 years old, Barker remains on the same prescription thyroid medication.

Overcoming Health Problems
Over the years, Barker has dealt with a variety of health issues. She had surgery in 1999 to repair partially blocked ducts and reduce the risk of infection. He suffered a stroke in 2002 and underwent prostate surgery. Barker has also treated many mild cases of skin cancer, falls that required hospital visits, and serious back problems. Burnet added supplements to Barker’s vegetarian diet to regain his strength, which greatly contributed to his overall well-being.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy
After retiring from “The Price Is Right,” Barker made guest appearances on the show, including a special appearance on his 90th birthday in 2013. Despite his departure, Barker never lost his passion.
