Have you ever found something in a box in the attic and didn’t know what it was? These are things that may have been very familiar to our grandparents, but the idea of what they were capable of has been lost over time.
This also includes the picture of what we have for you above. Although your grandparents and great-grandparents may have used this frequently, very few people use it this way today. In fact, the internet had a very difficult time figuring out what it was.In case you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s a hand mixer. It was used in the kitchen to mix food and really saved a lot of time compared to mixing with a spoon. Of course it wasn’t electric, but the rotating parts messed things up very quickly.
The patent for a mixer with rotating parts was issued in Baltimore, Maryland in 1865. Shortly thereafter, in 1857, a mixer appeared, and in 1859 another whisk was patented.These continued to be a very popular part of kitchen appliances and although we now have automatic appliances, they still worked very well to save time in the kitchen, which is why they were so popular.

It’s always interesting to see things like this because they were very popular many years ago. Who knows, maybe in 100 years people will be wondering what we use in the kitchen.
